Iran's chargé d'affaires in Bucharest, Javad Karimi, was summoned to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday, at the disposal of minister Oana Țoiu, to be presented with Romania's “profound concerns regarding the conduct” of his country in the context of the crisis in the Middle East, according to the statement sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The MFA said that the Romanian side sent a “firm protest” against the military attacks launched by the Tehran regime on the states of the Middle East, as well as against the recent events in Cyprus, emphasizing the “deeply negative impact on regional security and stability, including on maritime security”.
“Romania makes a firm appeal for the urgent de-escalation of tensions and for the protection of civilians, emphasizing the priority that Romania gives to the safety of its own citizens in the conflict zone,” the MFA press release states.
At the same time, according to the institution, “the Romanian side conveyed its deep concern for the violation of the sovereignty of the states in the region that were the target of Iran's indiscriminate attacks and Romania's full solidarity with these countries”.
“At the same time, the constant request of Romania and its European partners was conveyed for Iran to act responsibly with regard to its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and to refrain from destabilizing activities in the region,” concluded the MFA.
The war in the Middle East began on Saturday when US and Israeli forces launched an operation against Iran amid concerns over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Tehran retaliated by attacking Israel, US targets and US-allied objectives in other countries in the region. Israel also launched strikes on Lebanon after it was attacked by Iran-backed Shiite militia Hezbollah.
