The helicopter, a Russian-made Mi-17, was reported missing on Sunday afternoon after taking off from the city of Pisco, in the Ica region, bound for Chala, in the Arequipa region, approximately 1,100 km south of the capital Lima. Rescue teams eventually located the wreckage of the aircraft in the Chala area.
The device had been used in the last few days in operations to help the population following the floods caused by the heavy seasonal rains in the Arequipa region. The air force ordered an investigation to elucidate the cause of the accident.
