Testimonies from the Mining File in June 1990. The indictment describes how the miners hunting was spent on the streets

The more than 1,400 pages of the General Prosecutor's Office in the Mining file of June 1990 contain strong testimonies. Beaten with the ranges, the hoses that had nuts or taps at the ends, the victims of the miners recalled the horror moments lived during those days, the prosecutors say. Former President Ion Iliescu, former prime minister Petre Roman, together with Gelu Voican Voiculescu, Virgil Măgureanu, Adrian Sârbu and Miron Cozma were sent to court again, for crimes against humanity, after the General Prosecutor's Office had to resume the entire investigation from scratch.

  • Without the contribution of the authorities from the highest level, the facts of the miners directed against some people in the Capital would have remained at the stage of specific violent actions, prosecutors accuse.
  • Among the more than 10,000 miners brought to Bucharest were infiltrated police, security and army people, who actively participated in violence, the data in the file shows.
  • Four people were killed, two women were raped, over 1,300 injured people, and another 1,200 lacking freedom during the mining.
  • “I thank you once again for what you have demonstrated these days: that you are a strong force, with a high civic, working discipline, people of hope and for good, but especially for hard,” former President Ion Iliescu told the miners before leaving the Capital.
  • The Mining file will be resolved by the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

“Prelude in keeping the situation under control”

Almost 35 years after the events considered a black page in the history of Romania, the military section of the General Prosecutor's Office has completed the investigation in the Mining file. It is the second attempt by the prosecutors for holding those who orchestrated the mining on June 13-15. In 2017, the file was first sent to court, but three years later, the High Court decided to return the investigation to the Prosecutor's Office to complete the criminal prosecution.

The new indictment prepared by the prosecutor Daniela Dediu covers almost 1,500 pages. The act of accusing the 8 defendants shows how it worked in those days the “manipulating mechanism” put by the former president Ion Iliescu, whose express request was brought to Bucharest.

“Once arrived in Bucharest, the miners are expressly guided by the defendant Iliescu Ion to the center of the Capital, in which at that time the situation was a quiet one, and the actions subsequently demonstrate that they were sent with clearly violent and intimidating missions. Without the authorities from the highest level, to the most level, Eered down under the incidence of simple offenses against the person ”, it is shown in the prosecutors' indictment.

Through the contribution of the central authorities, the miners were transferred specific attributions such as the legitimation, search or detention.

The violent activity of the miners not only was not stopped, but even the way of reporting the law enforcement in the capital was one of acceptance.

“I was also on the street and I saw, yet they were civilized. It is not true what they said everywhere they molested. You know that they stopped me and asked you who you were and talked to you civilized and if you told them, I didn't tell them, I showed them that I went to you. Minister Ioan Cheșa at the Government meeting on June 16.

Between miners and law enforcement of that period there was “a cooperation in keeping the situation under control”.

Witnesses heard by the prosecutors told that the people of the Security infiltrated among the miners were easily recognized: they were cared for, they did not have unacked hands, they wore new miner uniforms, and in their feet or boots specific to the police. The authentic miners wore specific shoes.

The target of the miners was initially the University Square. In addition to the protesters there, the miners made by the central authorities attacked the houses of the opposition leaders- Corneliu Coposu, Ioan Rațiu- but also newspaper editors.

Hundreds of people were simply hunted on the streets of the capital because they did not match the ideals of the miners. The targeted were “students, intellectuals (who were noted for the port of glasses or western source clothing, such as bluejeans).

“I was hit over my fingers and caused me a wound that started to bleed.”

The testimonies of the victims attacked on the streets:

“I did not resist, I put my device around my neck and tried to remove the device from the case. They did not wait to do this operation and the two started hitting me. I was hit over my fingers and caused me a wound that started to bleed. And the first name. My white shirt had become red. ” (victim Constantin C.)

“On the sidewalk next to the National Theater I noticed that a woman, around 30 years, who seemed pregnant, was assaulted by a few miners. When I saw this episode I revolted and intervened in the woman's defense, I screamed at the aggressors and I told them to stop. The legitimacy at work to show them that I am going to work and that I have no connection with the events of June 13, 1990. One of the miners took my wallet, the other snatched my chain from the neck, and the others started to hit me with nuts Doru A.)

“I moved in front of the university building I was attacked by 4 miners, one with a very big ramp. I passed by the miners, but I was hit back with a rang. A gentleman who had an extraordinarily clean miner's jumpsuit and told the miners to stop because he would legitimize me. “(Victim Eugenia A.).

“In 1990 I was a student in high school and I remember that one afternoon I left the high school (…) when I arrived in the area of the University Rond was over us (all those who had descended from the bus) a group of 10-20 miners who had sticks and pressure hoses. They started to beat us. Behind the History Museum, where an ambulance came and I was given medical care, after which I was transported to the hospital ”. (victim George Robert C.)

The victims of the aggressions during the mining's time have designed in their testimonies the obvious collaboration between police and miners.

“I was dragged by miners on the sidewalk, at a distance of about 20 meters, where they introduced me to a gentleman, dressed in a brown, civil suit, about 50 years old, saying about me that I am a guln. That person applied a punch in my stomach. Given with perfume. At the entrance to the scale of a block, where I was taken by miners with force, receiving blows.

The central authorities not only did nothing to stop miners violence, but made sure that the miners did not lack food.

When leaving the Capital, Ion Iliescu gave a speech of thanks to the miners: “I thank you once again for what you have demonstrated these days: that you are a strong force, with a high civic discipline, workmanship, people of hope and for good, but especially for the wishes. Your places.
