Four trains of the state railway company in Luxembourg, removed from the service, will arrive, in a first phase, in Romania, writes Luxembourg Times, in the context in which the railways in this country go through a significant transition.
CFL's national railway company begins to gradually eliminate its trains from the 2000 series, also known as Z2 wagons, after more than three decades of service.
The first four trains (more precisely the 2001, 2016, 2019 and 2021 wagons) have already been transported to Saarbrücken, and they will continue their journey to Romania, where “they will start their second life,” writes the publication in Luxembourg.
The information is reported by the Romanian journalist Marius Comort, by a post made on his Facebook page on Wednesday night.
A Romanian buyer has acquired almost the entire stock of these nostalgic vehicles, but CFL did not provide specific information about the place where trains will be located in Romania, nor who purchased them.
Another six Z2 trains are scheduled to be transferred to Romania until the end of June, the second phase of delivery.
CFL intends to replace the entire Z2 fleet with the new Coradia Stream High Capacity trains, by the end of 2025. Coradia Stream High Capacity trains benefit from a substantial increase in passenger's capacity.
What Luxembourg Times writes, according to Marius Comper:
- Each Zagon Z2 offers only 168 seats, while the new three -wagon Coradia offers 334 seats, and the six -wagon version houses 692 passengers. By combining up to nine wagons, a single train Coradia can carry over 1,000 seated passengers.
- The Z2 trains were installed on the Luxembourg rail network on July 26, 1990, when the first entered the service.
- The fleet eventually increased to 22 wagons, the last one being delivered in 1992. From the initial fleet, one was canceled a few years ago, 20 were sold to Romania, and one will remain in Luxembourg as part of the local railway collection.
- Each Zagon Z2 traveled about four million kilometers during its CFL service.
- Vehicles are particularly appreciated by mechanics for their robust relay technology, which makes simple repairs compared to modern trains.
- Each wagon has a length of at least 50 meters.
- The Z2 wagons transported to Romania were moved in the form of merchandise with low and electricity pantrics on board.
The CFL has already begun to operate the first examples of Coradia Stream trains of high capacity in the autumn of 2024, with a total of 34 new wagons that will be put into circulation until the spring of 2026.
This renewal of the fleet is part of the CFL strategy of modernizing and expanding its passenger transport capacity in the Luxembourg rail network.
