Ryanair will pay for staff from airports increased bonuses from 1.5 to 2.50 euros for each hand luggage that exceeds the dimensions identified in passengers, the head of the BBC airline announced.
Michael O'Leary told the BBC that the bonuses will be increased from November this year and that “I do not ask for any excuse for it.”
O'Leary said that the bonus aims to discourage the small minority that brings luggage larger than the size limit, insisting that the airline “does not try to hunt people”.
If people “do not respect the rules and try to get on board with an oversized luggage, we will catch them and look forward to reward and give bonuses to our staff who identify these oversized luggage,” said Ryanair.
Ryanair passengers have the right to carry a free luggage on board, but can be charged for up to 86 euros if they try to bring a higher baggage than the one on a flight, depending on the route and the date of the trip.
“Our rules”
Currently, the airline allows a small hand luggage, with maximum dimensions of 40 cm x 20 cm x 25 cm and weight of 10 kg, for each ticket.
However, after a change in EU rules, these dimensions will increase to 40 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm from September.
O'Leary says that about 200,000 passengers a year have to pay extra to put their hand luggage and that they are not sorry for the “speculators” who try to bring “backpacks” on board.
“We are the airline with the lowest rates in Europe. These are our rules. Please follow the rules, as 99.9% of our 200 million passengers do, and you will have no problem,” said Michael O'Leary.
In addition to increasing the bonus per luggage, Ryanair eliminates the limit of 80 euros that the staff can earn monthly for catching people with too high luggage.
The executive director of Ryanair also said he wants “the soil staff to catch the people who deceive the system”.
