Former Prime Minister Theodor Stolojan stated, at Digi24 that PNL should give up the idea of maintaining the unique tax rate, the Liberal claiming that it has already fulfilled its purpose and now it is necessary to rethink the tax philosophy.

“PNL, a party of which I am a part, has a mantra, not to give up the single share,” commented Theodor Stolojan adding that no study has been conducted to justify maintaining the unique quota in the current economic context of Romania.

Stolojan said that, when the single share was introduced, the measure was thought of as a temporary one, meant to reduce the development gaps to the European Union.

“The time has come to change the unique quota at this stage. I supported it in 2005 and I had a very clear mind what many of my colleagues then had in mind, namely that this unique share will produce their beneficial effect until the recovery of the gaps,” said Stolojan.

He recalled that Romania reached a GDP per capita in 2024 almost 80% of the EU average, which represents sufficient progress from the perspective of the unique tax rate.

“We need to ask ourselves why most countries in the European Union have a tax system than the unique share,” said Theodor Stolojan.

On the other hand, the former prime minister criticized the establishment of a solidarity tax for revenues of over 10,000 lei a month, stating that the threshold is fixed too low. Thus, the middle class will be hit, the one that should be stimulated. Stolojan said that a threshold of 20,000 lei would be a more reasonable one.
