The President of Romania, on a visit to Roșia Montană next to the family, said that at the moment it does not consider a possible exploitation of the gold from there because “the potential, and identity, beyond the economic, is much greater, than by laughing everything,” reports News.ro.
“If we talk about gold and technology today, the mining is excluded, to be very clear. That is, for the level of resources we have here and the technology we have today, it can be done mining only by destroying everything and it cannot be. The potential, and identity, beyond the economic, is much greater,”
He considers that in the future a possible exploitation of gold from Roşia Montană cannot be excluded if new technologies appear in this regard.
“Without mining with today's technology. If there are some technologies over 50, the better,” concluded the head of state.
Nicușor Dan and his family were on Monday in Roșia Montană, where the president visited the Romanian galleries and met with volunteers of the campaign “Adopt a house in Roşia Montană”, a program to save the heritage.
In 2021, the area of the Mine of Roşia Montană was registered in the list of UNESCO World Heritage, for a ensemble considered “exceptional” by Romanian galleries dating from the second century, which UNESCO officials stated to be “the most important and vast known.”
In 2015, Gabriel Resursces sued the Romanian state for blocking the Gold Exploitation Project from Roşia Montană, demanding supposed financial and activity damages caused by this decision and demanding damages of $ 6.7 billion. The Canadian company lost the trial in 2024.
