Mauritius Brauerei, a historic German brewery producing for major supermarket chains like Rewe, Globus, and discount retailer Lidl, is facing a severe crisis. Despite strong partnerships and a well-rounded product line, the brewery has struggled to withstand the pressures of declining beer consumption and rising costs. Recently, it filed for bankruptcy.
With 51 employees and an annual production of 200,000 hectoliters, the brewery is now on the verge of collapse in a tough market. In early March, it submitted a bankruptcy petition.
New Hope for Mauritius Brewery’s Future
Recently, a potential buyer’s acquisition offer has surfaced, sparking new hope for the employees in Zwickau, Saxony. The “Freie Presse” first reported this development. Bankruptcy trustee Henry Girbig confirmed to “Bild” that negotiations are ongoing, stating, “There is an offer. There are several interested parties, and discussions are in progress.”
No agreements have been finalized yet. A creditors’ meeting scheduled for September 1 will determine whether the brewery will be sold to the interested party. Girbig noted, “Currently, all employees remain employed, and production is ongoing.”
According to a proposal from the Chemnitz District Court, the brewery, along with its properties and production facilities, is expected to be sold for at least 3 million euros. Stakeholders are hopeful for the continued operation of this proud establishment.
Statements from the Brewery’s President
Brewery president Jorg Dierig expressed optimism to “Bild,” saying, “There is a positive outlook for continued operation. There is no reason why the business cannot continue.”
Existing partnerships with large supermarket chains are also aiding in the brewery’s potential recovery. Dierig emphasized that the bankruptcy was triggered by “massive price increases since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine,” particularly in energy, malt, hops, and beer returnable packaging. Many other breweries in Germany have found themselves in similar situations.
