A tragic bus accident occurred in eastern Hungary during the night from Saturday to Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 Polish nationals. This incident adds to the concerning tally of approximately 38 similar accidents involving Polish buses abroad in the 21st century, with Germany recording the highest number of these events.
In the last 26 years, the total count of Polish bus accidents overseas stands at around 38, with about 21 of those resulting in fatalities. It’s estimated that the total death toll is approximately 124, with at least 728 individuals injured over this period.
The majority of these accidents have taken place in Germany, accounting for 11 out of the 38 incidents, or about 29 percent. Many of these tragic events were linked to pilgrimages or tourist trips.
Out of the 38 recorded accidents, there were a few instances where no passengers were injured, but fatalities occurred in other vehicles, such as the 2012 incident in Serbia that claimed the lives of three police officers.
The average death toll of 124 individuals translates to more than five fatalities per year from 2001 to 2022, though this figure reflects a highly uneven distribution over the years.
Recent Polish Bus Accidents
On August 6, 2022, 12 people died and 32 were injured when a bus transporting pilgrims to Medjugorje veered off the A4 motorway north of Zagreb and fell into a ditch.
On July 11, 2017, a Polish bus returning from Greece overturned on a highway near Feketić, Serbia, resulting in one fatality and 25 injuries.
In Germany, on July 19, 2014, a Polish bus collided with a Ukrainian bus and a minibus near Dresden, leading to 11 deaths and 69 injuries.
On September 11, 2012, two people died and more than 40 were injured in an accident in Alsace, France.
Another notable incident occurred on August 25, 2012, when a tourist bus traveling from Bulgaria to Poland crashed in northern Serbia, resulting in no injuries among the passengers but causing the deaths of three Serbian police officers who were struck by the vehicle.
Other recent accidents include a June 6, 2012 collision with a truck in which 25 passengers were slightly injured, and a May 22, 2012 crash in the Czech Republic that injured six people.
Historical Context of Polish Bus Accidents
Before 2010, notable accidents included a July 11, 2008 crash near Indija, Serbia, that killed six and injured 13. In 2007, 26 people died in a bus accident in the French Alps while traveling to religious sites.
In total, the statistics reveal a worrying trend concerning the safety of Polish bus travel abroad, highlighting the need for increased awareness and improved safety measures for travelers.
