Czech Republic Faces Qualification Crisis After 1-1 Draw with South Africa

The Czech Republic’s situation at the 2026 World Cup has become precarious following a 1-1 draw with South Africa in their second Group A match. After suffering a defeat against South Korea in their opening game, the Czechs have managed to secure only one point and must defeat Mexico in their final group match to keep their hopes of advancing alive.
The Czech media was unforgiving in its critique of Miroslav Koubek’s team following the match.
Shock and Disappointment Following Draw with South Africa
iSport.cz sounded the alarm after the second consecutive match without a victory: “Failure, disappointment, and the threat of elimination. The World Cup is following a similar pattern to the European Championship in Germany. Miroslav Koubek’s team has failed to secure a win, even against South Africa on American soil.”
Although Michal Sadílek quickly put the Czechs ahead in front of 67,000 spectators in Atlanta, South Africa equalized late in the match via a penalty. The result means the Czechs must now win against the host nation Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium to advance to the knockout stage.
Sport.cz also offered harsh criticism: “A disaster; the Czechs wasted three points. It was a colossal mistake to simply wait for what the opponents would do to us.”
The Czechs struggled to manage their second group match as well. Despite holding an early lead from Sadílek’s goal, they could not maintain it and settled for a 1-1 draw against South Africa. Hope remains, but their chances for qualification before facing Mexico are slim.
The most biting reaction came from Aktuálně.cz: “Complete uselessness. The Czechs lost a match they needed to win. Qualification seems like science fiction now.”
While Miroslav Koubek’s team secured its first point of the tournament after the loss to South Korea, the prospect of advancing has grown even more distant. They will face Mexico in their group stage finale and must defeat the favorites on their home turf to reach the playoffs.
The Czech public television CT Sport did not hold back either: “The key match in the battle for qualification ended in a draw. The Czech players did not confirm their status as favorites against South Africa, finishing with a score of 1-1.”
Meanwhile, iDnes.cz underscored the significant complications that have arisen ahead of the decisive clash with Mexico: “The Czech representatives have secured only one point from a match that started excellently and have complicated their qualification fight considerably. After Sadílek’s quick goal, the fastest scored in this World Cup, Mokoena responded just before the end with a penalty.”
Everything Rests on the Match Against Mexico
With only one point after two matches, the Czech Republic is obligated to win against Mexico in the final round to maintain any chance of advancing to the knockout stage. The match will be held at the legendary Azteca Stadium, and the Czech media considers the task for Koubek’s squad to be extremely difficult, given they will be facing Mexico’s home supporters.
