Mikie Sherrill, the governor of the state of New Jersey, has seen what public transport ticket prices will be like during the World Cup and believes that FIFA should deal with the movement of fans.
The controversy arose after several sources in the States announced that the train company New Jersey Transit plans to introduce a special fare for the 30-minute journey between Penn Station, in New York, and the MetLife Stadium: a round-trip train ticket could cost more than €85 (about 420 lei at the current exchange rate), a seven-fold increase from the usual fare of €11, according to abola.pt.
Train ticket prices have exploded in the United States of America
No discounts are provided, which means that both children and seniors will have to pay the full price.
MetLife Stadium, which for the duration of the tournament will be renamed the New York/New Jersey Stadium due to FIFA's policies on sponsored names, will host eight matches, including the tournament final on July 19.
“We inherited an agreement where FIFA does not provide a dollar for transportation to the World Cup. While NJ TRANSIT has a bill of $48 million to get fans safely to the games, FIFA makes 11 billion. FIFA should pay for the travel,” said Mikie Sherrill, according to the source quoted.
The response from FIFA came immediately: “FIFA is not aware of any other major event previously held at NYNJ Stadium, including other major sports, global concert tours, etc., where organizers have been required to pay for fan transportation.”
This price increase is not limited to New Jersey. In Foxborough, near Boston, train fares for games at Gillette Stadium have also increased to $80, and bus tickets cost $95.
In addition to public transport, parking at stadiums also presents high costs. A seat at MetLife Stadium will cost $191, while in Foxborough the price will be $148.
