Karp Karpolov
On this day, the Apostle Carp, a disciple of St. Paul, is honored. Thanks to the name of the saint, people quickly associated his holiday with fishing. In Rus', it was believed that Karp was a good fish for its “namesakes” – carp, so the men went fishing together.
On this day, it was customary to place pots and bowls under flowering rosehip bushes. This was done to get rid of the unpleasant smell from household dishes. And people themselves tried to breathe the air next to the rosehip – it was believed that it helped against various diseases.
Karp was also invited to the stove maker’s house to inspect and adjust the stove. After work, the craftsmen were always treated to a loaf of bread, and one piece was placed behind the stove – for the brownie who was disturbed during the repair. In general, they tried to treat stove makers with respect – the comfort in the house depended on their work, especially in winter.
We paid attention that day to mosquitoes. If there were a lot of them, then the last days of June were expected to be warm but rainy.
