The Norkel Sulfur Program project was recognized as one of the successful practices for the implementation of the federal project “Clean Air” in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

On September 3, Krasnoyarsk was visited by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation Maxim Korolkov. The working visit was aimed at discussing the implementation of the measures of the federal project “Clean Air” of the National Project “Environmental Welfare” in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

The region includes five cities: Krasnoyarsk, Norilsk, Minusinsk, Achinsk and Lesosibirsk. In particular, Krasnoyarsk, according to Maxim Korolkov, is one of the leaders in the implementation of measures aimed at reducing the emissions of pollutants from the private sector. A positive effect is achieved due to the transfer of private houses heated by coal to environmentally friendly types of heating and automatic solid fuel boilers.

The deputy minister also commented on the course of the sulfur program – one of the largest measures to improve the quality of the air, which is implemented in Norilsk in the Krasnoyarsk Territory by Norkel.

“Norilsk Nickel implemented first of all the sulfur program at the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant. Rosprirodnadzor verified that the event was completed. Now we are watching how the company works a calendar year, how to install automatic emissions control systems so that we verify the effect not only according to the results of verification events, but also in online mode, ”said Maxim Korolkov.

The effectiveness of the recycling of sulfur dioxide, leaving the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant, was more than 99 %according to the results of verification. In 2024, the second technological line of the sulfur program was launched. The volume of abbreviation of emissions in Norilsk, according to the results of last year, amounted to 390 thousand tons, this year the company intends to double the indicator. The total investment in the construction of the project after its full implementation is predicted at 250 billion rubles.

In order to fulfill the requirements for equipping sources of emissions provided by federal legislation, Axioma’s innovative product has developed automated systems of control systems. The system works on the basis of artificial intelligence technologies and digital double. Its commissioning is planned for the third quarter of 2025. In addition, to evaluate the effect of the implementation of environmental measures, Norkel, on his own initiative, developed and launched in Norilsk a publicly available system of automatic control over the state of air.

The mining and metallurgical company also cleans the territories from industrial pollution, implementing the Pure Norilsk program with a total financing of 40 billion rubles, annually replenishes the fish reserves in the Yenisei and Taimyr’s water bodies, is studying the impact of production on biodiversity, and contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
