Heated debates between Nicușor Dan and George Simion on the opposition to the European Council

“Europe does not exist as an entity. Romania does not have to vote on the knees in the European Council,” said George Simion during the first television debate of the candidates ranked on the first two places in the presidential elections 2025. Such an approach would place Romania in the center of the states and EU measures on the sanction of Russia.

George Simion said that if Romania would represent in the European Council, it will not support a new support package for Ukraine unless it is “in the national interest”.

The golden leader said that “Europe does not exist as an entity”, but consists of 27 states with its own interests, and Romania must vote in the European Council exclusively according to the national interest, not “on the knees, like Iohannis”.

“Romania will oppose? / Europe does not exist”

“My country is Romania. I will vote only in accordance with the interest of the Romanian nation and without prioritizing other states. Our position towards Russia's aggression war is neutrality, not escalation, not supply with weapons.”Simion said.

George Simion has completed that Romania should align “perfect” With the Trump administration, reiterating that defense must remain in NATO and not EU duties.

His counter -candidate Nicușor Dan requested clarifications: “I want to understand well, Mr. Simion says that if the EU votes a support for Ukraine, will Romania oppose it? ”

“Europe does not exist as an entity, there are 27 states that make up the EU. Our position in the European Council must be in accordance with the national interests and not on the knees as Iohannis represented Romania”, he concluded.

Such an approach would place Romania between the states that oppose EU's efforts and measures on Russia. Currently Hungary and Slovakia are the two European states with leaders close to Russia, who have blocked various sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia. As a result, both states are marginalized.

The European Commission presented a roadmap for EU states to give up the fuel imports from Russia on Tuesday. Among the measures are the gradual prohibition of the conclusion of new contracts for the import of Russian gas and the termination of contracts in force so that from 2027 the EU countries will no longer buy from Russia gases delivered through pipes and no liquefied natural gas (GNL).

Hungary has also blocked more EU efforts to reimburse the countries to transport weapons to Ukraine and make it difficult to use revenues from frozen Russian assets to help finance Kiev.
