On the day of Saint Eudoxia, whose memory is celebrated at this time, it was customary to hill up potatoes. In addition, people observed signs: like Evdokia, so is summer; the moon born in rainy Evdokia means a wet summer, and if the north wind also blows, it means a cold summer.
Also on this day they revered Saint Andronicus – or Ondron, as he was called in Rus'. This saint was considered a deliverer from drought. He was asked to “open the gates of heaven so that the rains may fall on the grain that has fallen into the ground.” For the same purpose, special spells were pronounced and various rituals were performed.
