NATO will cease to exist if the United States leaves the defense bloc. This was stated by the former Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg, writes SVT.
Strengthening the role of the EU countries will not replace Washington, says the former head of the Alliance, who now works as Norway’s Minister of Finance.
“I have great respect for the EU, but I don’t think it can replace NATO in matters of collective security and defense guarantees,” says Stoltenberg.
In his opinion, Europe is in its most difficult situation since the Second World War, and without the United States it simply will not survive.
“This is about Europe and the United States standing together and confronting all threats. That is why it is so important to do everything possible to prevent a rupture,” he said.
Stoltenberg also called for avoiding excessive speculation about the future of NATO, so as not to encourage the aggressor country Russia.
“We cannot allow Moscow to have doubts about our readiness to protect each other,” the former secretary general concluded.
