The appointment of Marius Baciu to the FCSB bench brings back to attention one of the most controversial episodes in the career of the former stopper, a scandal that caused a stir in Romanian football in the fall of 2019.
Back then, Baciu was coaching Turris Turnu Măgurele, the team financed by the Dragnea family, and after a match won by the Teleormanians with Sportul Snagov, score 3-2, on November 13, 2019, the technician was picked up directly from the stadium by DIAS special troops (Police Detachment for Rapid Intervention) and taken to hearings at the Prosecutor's Office next to the Bucharest Court.
Marius Baciu's name appeared in an investigation related to the betting mafia
The moment immediately caused a real shock in the football worldespecially since, in the first hours, a lot of contradictory information circulated around the case. It was initially speculated that Baciu's name would appear in an investigation related to the betting mafia, but prosecutors later said that the hearing did not concern such a case. In parallel, other information appearing in the public space talked about suspicions regarding tax evasion and possible accusations of money laundering.
At the center of the scandal was the time Baciu spent at Daco-Getica Bucharesta club that was then going through one of the most difficult financial situations in its existence. After the relegation from League 1, the team had reached an almost total collapse: huge wage arrears, drastically reduced budget and big organizational problems.
In that context, according to the information that appeared at the time, Baciu would have accepted a financial aid of 2,000 euros from the father of a playermoney that was going to support the team's activity and that came together with the desire for the son of the respective businessman to be evaluated at the club. It was about Franco Marius Paraschiv, the son of Viorel Paraschiv, a businessman involved in the trade of SH cars and company clothes in Germany.
The footballer was later registered at Daco-Getica, but failed to establish himself. He got very few minutes, and this quickly created tension between the player's family and the coach.
According to sources at the time, the footballer's father would have started to put pressure on Baciu and ask for his money back, unhappy that his boy was not being used. Several people from the club's entourage claimed that the coach would have returned the full amount, even in the presence of witnesses, but the conflict degenerated and an official complaint was filed against him.
The truth about the rise of Baciu with masks: 2,000 euros from the father of a player + official investigation for fixing the match with UTA. Main suspect: player-disguised as referee, unpunished by FRF
At the center of another suspicious event. However, the FRF investigations did NOT target him
In parallel, Baciu's name was also associated with another extremely sensitive episode: the match UTA – Daco-Getica 6-0contested in September 2019 and subsequently brought to the attention of the FRF's Integrity Department. The federation had information regarding possible suspicions of betting arrangements, and the internal investigation focused in particular on some players from the Bucharest team.
One of the footballers targeted was Alin Stoica, a defender transferred to Daco-Getica at the time and who had previously appeared in a “Football Leaks” investigation into friendly match-fixing in Cyprus.

The game in Arad raised many question marks due to the manner in which the goals were concededand the case further fueled the speculation surrounding Baciu. However, the information that emerged at the time indicated that the FRF investigation focused mainly on the players and the circumstances of the match, not directly on the coach.
After the hearings, Marius Baciu firmly rejected all the accusations and claimed that the whole situation was caused by a parent's dissatisfaction. The former defender stated at the time that he had never had connections with the betting mafia and that he was shocked by the intervention of the masked men, especially since he did not know the reason why he was being lifted from the stadium. He also claimed that he had invested personal money in football and that he would not have favored even his own child, let alone another player.
