Demi Moore's AI warning ahead of Cannes Film Festival: 'A battle we're going to lose'

US actress Demi Moore has urged the film industry to find ways to work with artificial intelligence (AI) and protect itself from it, rather than fighting a “battle we're going to lose” against it, Reuters reported.

The actress spoke about the evolution of AI tools on Tuesday ahead of the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival.

“AI is here. So fighting it is, in a way, fighting something that's a battle we're going to lose. So finding ways we can work with it is a more valuable path to take,” Demi Moore pointed out.

The American actress, who received her first Oscar nomination for horror film “The Substance” after its Cannes premiere in 2024, is among the nine members of the jury that will hand out the top Palme d'Or award on May 23.

“Are we doing enough to protect ourselves? I don't know,” she added in the dialogue with journalists. “So I'd be inclined to say probably not,” Moore continued.

The festival does not allow the use of generative artificial intelligence in competitions, but discussion of the role of technology in filmmaking was a dominant theme.

New rules at the Oscars for AI tools

Amid industry concerns, earlier this month the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a set of new rules for the 99th Academy Awards in 2027, making clear that acting and writing must be done by humans, not AI, to be eligible for the film industry's highest honors.

Under the Academy's new rules, filmmakers can use AI tools, but a “synthetic” actor will not be eligible for an Oscar, the organization said in a statement. The Academy said screenplays also had to be “written by people” to be considered.
