Rospotrebnadzor explained why you want tomato juice on a plane

On air travel, tomato juice is most popular among passengers because other juices seem tasteless. The reason is that at high altitudes, human taste buds react to increased pressure – a lack of oxygen reduces their sensitivity.
This was reported on the social networks of the Krasnoyarsk Rospotrebnadzor, answering a corresponding question from a subscriber.
“For example, orange juice, which seemed bright and sweet on earth, turns into sour water “without a soul” in the sky. The lemon becomes simply “sour” rather than “refreshingly sour”. But tomato juice is tricky. It has a complex, multifaceted taste: there is sweetness, sourness, and the famous umami – the so-called “fifth taste”, which is responsible for the feeling of satiety and depth. It is umami (glutamates that are naturally found in tomatoes) that breaks through the armor of dull receptors. In flight, tomato juice reveals itself brighter than on the ground, and seems like a real elixir. In addition, drinking tomato juice in moderation helps maintain water-salt balance during the flight,” the department explained.
