“From now on, the prime minister no longer enjoys the support of the parliamentary majority, which means that he no longer has the democratic legitimacy to lead the Romanian government,” the PSD said.

The party declared that it was open to joining a “new, pro-European government” and supporting another prime minister, “regardless of whether he will be a politician or a technocrat, open to citizens' problems and able to cooperate with parties to ensure a parliamentary majority.”

Prime Minister Bolojan announced that he would appoint interim successors to seven ministers from among the remaining members of the cabinet. They will be able to serve for 45 days before parliament must appoint a new cabinet.

PSD, the largest party in Romania, until Thursday was one of the four parties forming the government coalition since June 2025. Apart from her, the pro-European government included Prime Minister Bolojan's National Liberal Party (PNL), the liberal Union for the Salvation of Romania (USR) and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). The parties forming the coalition agreed that the head of PNL will be the head of government in 2025–2027, and the head of government will be designated by PSD for 2027–2028.

Since taking power, the coalition government has taken a number of unpopular measures, such as tax increases and spending cuts, to reduce the country's budget deficit, the highest in the European Union. These decisions had an impact on the PSD's ratings, whose voters switched to the far-right opposition. On Monday, the party called on the prime minister to resign.

In November 2025, former Romanian Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu (USR) resigned from his position after journalists revealed that in his CV he included information about obtaining a degree from a university he never attended. (PAP)
