For the first time in the region, the Krasnoyarsk Regional Clinical Hospital performed a one-stage operation to replace two hip joints.
According to the press service of the regional Ministry of Health, a 40-year-old patient two months ago I was seriously injured. To him A diagnosis of “false joints (pseudoarthrosis) of the femoral necks on both sides” was made. Because of pathology, the man could only move with the help of a wheelchair.
Endoprosthetics in this situation has become a justified necessity and the only opportunity to return the patient to vertical load and basic self-care functions. According to international recommendations, total arthroplasty for bilateral lesions in young and middle-aged patients is the method of choice.
According to orthopedic surgeons, with already formed false joints, preserving your own bones is impractical. Because there is a high risk of tissue necrosis, joint instability, chronic pain and, as a consequence, lifelong disability.
“In this case, the operation to replace both hip joints lasted 90 minutes. This was made possible thanks to accurate preoperative planning, modern rapid recovery protocols (ERAS) and the well-coordinated work of the surgical team. A one-stage intervention with careful selection is justified for several reasons: the safety of such an operation is comparable to a unilateral intervention, overall hospitalization is reduced by 30–40%, the total anesthesia and medication load is reduced, and due to the symmetrical load, the patient’s rehabilitation is accelerated,” explained the regional Ministry of Health.
An important step after such an operation is rehabilitation. On the 9th day, the patient was able to independently go out into the corridor and to change dressings. He is undergoing a course of electrical muscle stimulation and daily exercise therapy classes with an instructor.
Early and dosed exercise prevents contractures and thrombosis, and also ensures the proper functioning of endoprostheses. The success of the operation and the timing of return to independent life largely depend on the active participation of the patient himself in the recovery. There is still work to be done on his gait and strengthening his muscles, but doctors are already noticing clear positive dynamics in his condition.
“This clinical case clearly shows the capabilities of modern orthopedics: one-stage bilateral endoprosthetics with competent surgery using modern protocols and early rehabilitation opportunities give many patients a real chance from a wheelchair to return to a full quality of life,” added by the Ministry of Health.
