Folk calendar

Alexey Teply

Alexy, a man of God, lived at the end of the 4th and beginning of the 5th centuries.

It was believed that there was rapid snow melting in Rus' on that day. People used to say: “Like the streams on Alexei, so is the flood”; “Alexey – spill a jug from every snowdrift.” If large streams appeared on this day, then one should expect that the hollow water would also be large and spread widely across the meadows.

They also collected birch sap and drank it with the whole family. No less popular was the honey-birch broth (a type of sbiten). To prepare it, they took 150 grams of honey and sugar, a liter of birch sap and boiled them together for 20 minutes, after which they added spices – cloves, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, bay leaf – and boiled for another five minutes. Then the drink was filtered and served to the table. This infusion gave people strength. Birch buds were also collected on this day. Infused with wine or oil, they served as a balm for healing wounds and for treating rheumatism.

Birches have always been loved in Rus'. There is even a legend about their origin. One day the Sun saw mermaids lingering on the shore after dawn – and fell in love. It began to burn delicate skin with hot kisses and not let the beauties into the coolness of the river. Mother River, deciding to save her daughters, turned them into white-trunked beauties, but black burns from the kisses of the Sun remained on their bodies forever.

It was forbidden for Alexey to sit on the sleigh. They said: “They will roll the sleigh past desires.” This was due to the fact that the snow was melting rapidly, and the sleigh path became unsuitable for driving. On this day, goose fights were held, ending with feasts. In the southern regions, they took out beehives and began to sow oats and barley.
