Rail traffic blocked between Holdea and Margina after the locomotive of a train derailed

Railway traffic was temporarily suspended on Tuesday evening on the Holdea – Margina section, after the locomotive of a passenger train partially derailed. There were 23 passengers on the train, but no one was injured.

The National Railway Company “CFR” SA announced that on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 8:55 p.m., on the Timișoara Regional Railway Branch, a railway incident took place that led to the temporary stoppage of traffic on the Holdea – Margina distance.
According to the press release, train IR 1833, operated by CFR Călători, “recorded the derailment of the first bogie of the locomotive GM 920, in the direction of travel“, while traveling on a simple non-electrified line. At the time of the incident, there were 23 passengers on the train, and “no injured persons were registered”.
CFR representatives explain that “a bogie derailment is the derailment of a locomotive wheel assembly without affecting the carriages”. In such situations, standard safety procedures are activated, which involve the immediate stop of traffic, checking the infrastructure and the intervention of specialized teams to put the rolling stock back on the track.
Circulation, suspended until the completion of the intervention
Rail traffic on the affected section is still suspended, to allow interventions and technical checks to be carried out. “CFR SA, together with the railway operator, is acting to remedy the situation and resume traffic in safe conditions”the release states.
In parallel, the authorities analyze “the possibility of transferring passengers”, to reduce the impact on passengers.

The company emphasizes that “the safety of railway traffic is a permanent priority”and all necessary measures are quickly applied to manage the situation.
CFR representatives announce that they will return with updated information as the interventions progress, reaffirming the commitment to “ensuring safe, efficient and public interest-oriented rail transport”.
