Folk calendar
Vasily Kapelnik
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors St. Basil Dekapolit, confessor.
In Rus', it was customary for Vasily to bring a pine branch into the house: it purifies the air and gives health to the whole family. Healing infusions were prepared from pine needles and branches.
On this day, children suffering from dropsy were treated (this disease was also called sheep's dyspnea).
On the day of Vasily Kapelnik, the snow on the roofs began to melt. On this occasion they said: “On Vasily’s Day, look at the drips (icicles) – and the drops will come”; “Vasily will come and winter will cry.” Icicles were looked at not only for fun, but also to predict the harvest. So, long drips promised long flax.
There were other signs as well. If it rained, the summer must have been good. We also observed how the circles around the trees melted: if the edges are steep, then the spring will be steep, if the edges are gentle, then the spring will be long.
Kasyan Visokos, Kasyan Grozny
Saint Cassian “got” an unlucky day as a day of remembrance – February 29 (old style), which occurs in the calendar only once every four years. Leap years were considered unlucky by the people, since it was during them that all sorts of misfortunes most often occurred: livestock fell, trees withered, illnesses occurred, and discord began. In Rus' they said: “The offspring are bad in a leap year.”
This is why Cassian himself had a reputation as a strict and unkind saint. Not the most pleasant epithets were often added to his name: Envious, Grudge-bearing, Unmerciful, Terrible, Stingy. There are several sayings about him and his character: “Kasyan on the people – it’s hard for the people, Kasyan on the grass – the grass dries, Kasyan on the cattle – the cattle die”; “No matter what Kasyan looks at, everything withers.”
People were sure: the saint was angry that his memory was rarely honored: “The good miracle worker Nikola has two holidays a year, and the merciless Kasyan has one every four years.”
Kasyan's Day in the folk calendar is the most terrible. All the winds obeyed the saint. He could release them and send them on people – and with them plague and cholera came to the villages. On Kasyan, the peasants tried not to leave the hut at all, especially before dawn; all work stopped. And many tried not to wake up longer on Kasyanov’s day – to “sleep through” the worst time.
