A powerful volcanic eruption occurred in Hawaii; lava flowed for more than 10 hours. Video

Episode 42 concluded last night at 11:38 pm local time. During the eruption, both openings of the crater actively ejected lava, after which a fiery glow was recorded for a short time. Lava flows continued to spread along the crater floor, covering another 10–20% of the eastern part.

Both vents are quiet now, but are releasing persistent plumes of gas as the hot lava continues to slide down around them.

Seismic activity during the pause remains low, but instruments recorded the beginning of the rise of magma after deflation during gushing. Sulfur dioxide emissions are still less than during the active episode, ranging from 1 thousand to 5 thousand tons per day.

The USGS predicts that the next lava flow (Episode 43) may not occur for at least two to three weeks. The volcano has been erupting periodically since December 23, 2024, with pauses of up to two weeks between active episodes.

Scientists continue to closely monitor Kilauea and urge people to stay safe.
