President Nicușor Dan declared on Thursday, in a press conference held after participating in the informal meeting of the leaders of the European Council, that he is “optimistic” about the candidates registered for the leadership of the big prosecutor's offices.

Asked how he thinks of the proposals for the head of the prosecutor's office, the head of state said that, beyond the criticism that appeared in the public space, he sees “very interesting people” in the competition.

“It seems to me that there are some very interesting people among them, and I am speaking as seriously as possible. I have also seen the comments from the public space, they are not of the same opinion, on the contrary. Of course it is a competition. People come with a management plan, which I do not know at the moment, but just looking at the names that I have seen, for each of the three prosecutors' offices there are very interesting people and I am optimistic that they will dynamize”, said the president.

The head of state was also asked if Marius Voineag, who was for three years the chief prosecutor of the DNA and is now running for the position of deputy general prosecutor of Romania, is “an interesting name”.

“I'm not going to enter… you realize, it's a competition that has started. Regarding Mr. Voineag, it seems to me a speculation without any foundation that a man who may eventually be deputy at one institution will control another institution. That seems to me without any foundation,” said the president Nicușor Dan.

For the six positions put up for competition for the leadership of the General Prosecutor's Office, DNA and DIICOT, 19 candidates signed up, the Ministry of Justice announced on Monday. Ten of them are for the positions of general prosecutor, head of DNA and head of DIICOT. Most of the candidates are for the position of chief prosecutor of DIICOT, among them being the current head of this structure, Alina Albu.

The head of DNA, Marius Voineag, is running for the position of deputy general prosecutor, being the sure candidate for this position, while the current general prosecutor of Romania, Alex Florenta, is running for the position of deputy head of DIICOT.

President Nicușor Dan will have the last word in the appointment of the heads of the large prosecutor's offices.
