The investigation claims that in January 2023, the defendant performed a planned operation on a woman in one of the regional medical centers to remove a tumor. However, during the intervention, the surgeon could leave gauze material in the patient’s tissues.
The woman was discharged, but she experienced deterioration in health for a long time, in particular, her body temperature was elevated. The ex-patient repeatedly filed complaints with the person involved in the case, but he called it “a consequence of post-operative healing.”
“In April 2023, during an ultrasound examination, a foreign object was found in the patient – a surgical napkin in the area of the operation. According to the conclusion of the commission of forensic medical examination, a direct cause-and-effect relationship was established between the medical error and the infliction of serious health consequences on the victim,” the report says.
Prosecutors filed an indictment against the oncologist surgeon in court for improper performance of professional duties, which entailed grave consequences for the patient (Part 1 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
