“I demand immediate negotiations to re-discuss the US takeover of Greenland, as we have taken many other territories throughout our history,” he said in Davos. He also added that “he could decide to use force, but he will not.”
What topics did Donald Trump cover in his speech?
What did Donald Trump say about Greenland?
When does Donald Trump plan to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky?
What accusations did Trump make against NATO allies?
The American leader did not explain how he planned to take over Greenland, but noted that if it were in US hands, all NATO members would feel safer.
Accusations of “ungratefulness” of allies
Using the example of Greenland, Trump also accused NATO and Denmark of ingratitude. He expressed his belief that America receives virtually nothing in return for protecting its allies and that they would not come to the U.S.'s aid. Trump spoke in a similar way about all the countries represented in Davos, claiming that they “would not function without America” or would go bankrupt. However, he assured that he “does not seek to destroy them.” He gave the example of Switzerland, which, in his opinion, without the USA “would no longer be Switzerland.” He recalled that initially he decided to impose a 39% tax on goods from Switzerland. customs duties because he was irritated by the attitude of the country's president.
“Ukraine and Russia want to conclude a deal”
During his speech, the American leader also touched upon the war in Ukraine. As he said, both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky “want to make a deal.” However, he did not specify what it would guarantee and what issues it concerned. Trump also said that on Thursday (he originally said Wednesday, but later corrected himself), he would meet the president of Ukraine, who is currently in Kiev, but – according to the American website Axios – he will come to Davos.
Criticism towards Europe
The American leader also said that European countries are going in the wrong direction. He also assessed that the United States also followed it during Joe Biden's government, but it changed under his leadership. — In recent decades, the view has become widespread in Washington and European capitals that the only way to develop a modern Western economy is constantly growing public spending, uncontrolled mass migration and endless imports from abroad. (…) Virtually all the so-called experts predicted that my plans to end this failed model would lead to a global recession and runaway inflation, but we have proven them wrong. In fact, it's quite the opposite, Trump said.
Harsh words towards Canada
Donald Trump said that Canada would not exist without the United States. “Keep that in mind, Mark, next time you make a statement,” he added, referring to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose speech in Davos on Tuesday drew widespread praise. In it, Carney said that the “rules-based international order” established after the end of the Cold War was irreversibly disintegrating. Therefore, he called the so-called middle powers, including Canada, to stop “living a lie” and build new coalitions capable of resisting economic pressure from the major powers. In his speech, Trump did not refer to specific parts of Carney's speech, but he was clearly affected by the comment that the United States was using economic integration as a pressure tool.
