The President of Guatemala declares a state of emergency. The scale of violence is increasing


The consent of deputies to the National Congress will be required for the state of emergency to enter into force, the unicameral parliament of Guatemala. Probably, as local media expect, it will be approved on Monday.

President Arevalo explained in a statement posted on the X network that the state of emergency will be used “exclusively to combat organized crime, gangs and acts of violence intended to terrorize the population” of Guatemala.

On Sunday evening, the Guatemalan government said that armed forces took control of three prisons where riots had recently broken outand the rebellious convicts took hostages. These people, as specified, have already been released.

President Arevalo also announced three days of national mourning after the death of police officers — victims of attacks by criminal groups. In recent days, 7 policemen were killed and 10 were injured. “Their courage and sacrifice will forever remain an example of serving the nation,” emphasized the president of Guatemala.
