Europe must convey to Russia the message that “it will help Ukraine in the long term”, President Nicusor Dan said on Tuesday, in an interview granted to FranceinfoTV on Tuesday.
“What is important now is that Ukraine resists. It is a country that has the same values as us”, emphasized Nicusor Dan, who was on an official visit to Paris.
The Romanian president, who participated on Monday in the discussion within the “Coalition of the Will” initiated by London, was asked in particular about the American peace plan, initially very favorable to Russia, currently being negotiated between Washington and Kiev.
“It is good that there is talk of peace, but I am not at all optimistic, even at this moment, about the fact that Russia wants peace or even an armistice,” said the Romanian president.
Nicusor Dan expressed his concern about the consequences for Europe and Romania of a possible defeat of Ukraine. “We will become neighbors with Russia, so everything will change,” he said in the interview broadcast on Tuesday, according to News.ro.
However, Nicusor Dan, elected in May over a pro-Russian candidate, refuses for now to consider sending troops to Ukraine, even though “Russia said that Romania is not a friendly country”, notes Franceinfo.
“It's one of the things we can't do,” he added, reminding that Romania is, “just like Poland, one of the routes for all military and civilian aid” destined for Kiev.
Instead, the Romanian head of state avoided commenting on the American hesitations regarding the support given to Ukraine, considering that the president “Donald Trump is right” regarding the “financing of security in Europe” and the increase in the defense budgets of NATO members.
“I think that Europe and the United States have an interest in continuing their relations”, commented Nicușor Dan, in the context in which the American president had qualified a few hours earlier, in an interview given to Politico, the European leaders as “weak”. Trump also stated that European countries are “in decline”.
“We will be able (to ensure our security) in a few years”, estimated Nicusor Dan, mentioning the SAFE program of the European Union launched to facilitate the joint purchase of armaments.
