On this day, the memory of the holy princess Anna Vsevolodovna is celebrated – the daughter of the Kyiv prince Vsevolod Yaroslavich and the Greek princess, daughter of Constantine Monomakh.
In Rus' on this day they carefully monitored the weather, paying attention to signs. “Anna without snow – don’t expect bread,” people said, predicting the future harvest. A frosty day foreshadowed bad things: “Cold Anna means hungry autumn.”
If the wood in the stove burned strongly that day, and the flame roared up the chimney, this meant that a storm had to be expected. The approach of a severe cold was foreshadowed by low-floating clouds.
Girls at this time took up needlework – mainly flax spinning and weaving.
