Krasnoyarsk residents were told how to learn English from scratch on their own

Teachers from the Russian online school for learning English, Skyeng, told us how to learn the language from scratch on your own.
“Learning English from scratch is a real challenge. The main thing is a systematic approach and regularity. Self-study requires discipline, but allows freedom in choosing your pace and materials. This guide will help you create a clear learning plan and get from zero level to confident Elementary (A1),” say experts.
Step 1: Alphabet, sounds and reading rules. You can't build a house without a foundation. In English, the foundation is sounds. Many of them have no analogues in Russian, so it is important to pay attention to pronunciation from the very beginning.
- Learn the alphabet. Learn the names of letters and the sounds they make.
- Master transcription. It will help you correctly read unfamiliar words in the dictionary.
- Watch the video. There are many channels on the Internet where native speakers analyze each sound separately.
Correct pronunciation from the very beginning will help you avoid mistakes that are difficult to correct later.
Step 2: We collect the first vocabulary. You don't need to know 20,000 words to start speaking. For level A1, 500-700 words are enough. The main thing is to choose the right vocabulary. Start with high-frequency words—those that are used most often. Start with nouns for things around you, simple verbs (go, be, have, do) and adjectives (big, small, good, bad).
Step 3: Mastering Basic Grammar
- Verb to be. This is the basics. Learn to use it in statements, negations and questions (I am a student. He is not here. Are you ready?).
- Time Present Simple. Used to describe regular actions and facts (I live in Moscow. She speaks English).
- Articles a/an/the. Understand the basic difference between the indefinite article and the definite article.
- Pronouns. Personal (I, you, he), possessive (my, your, his) and demonstrative (this, that).
- Word order in a sentence. Subject, predicate, object.
For those who want more structured information about starting from absolute zero, there are many useful resources. For example, a detailed analysis can be found here: https://skyeng.ru/articles/anglijskij-s-nulya/.
