The huge European catfish that two Polish fishermen caught a few weeks ago, while participating in a fishing contest at a reservoir in Rybnik, Poland, is considered a world record for length, writes Yahoo Sports.
Krzysztof Pyra and Adrian Gontarz, from the Polish Academy of Fisheries, used a Berkley Pulse Shad to catch the 292cm fish.
“When we finally saw him, we couldn't believe our eyes— a huge fishenormous, a real monster”Pyra said.
He was estimated to have weighed 290 pounds (about 132 kg) and an estimated age of 60 years. It was not weighed as the competition is type catch and release (catch and release).
TVP World reported that this would be the world's largest ever rod and reel catfish, which may be true in a sense. However, the International Sport Fishing Association (IGFA) mentions that the world record for all types of gear is 135 kilograms, set by Attila Zsedely using a Rapala rod in the Po River in Italy in 2010. The IGFA does not mention a world record length for catfish, although Alessandra Biancardi is widely considered to be the length record holder at 2.85 meters caught in the Po River in 2023.
Even if the measurements are correct, the disqualifying factor for the catch, according to the IGFA, is that two anglers fought the fish, not just one, as the rules require.
The Polskiego Radia SA Portal report called it a Polish record, surpassing the previous mark of 261 cm, or 8.6 feet. Perhaps Poland has less strict rules than the IGFA regarding qualifying records.
