A number of 475 people were detained following a major raid at the Hyundai Metapant plant in the state of Georgia, the largest operation of this type ever carried out by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

The operation took place on Thursday at the Hyundai factory in Ellabell, a huge industrial complex, spread over almost 12 square kilometers, which includes both a production center for electric vehicles and a battery factory made in partnership with LG.

“Most are (south) Korean citizens“, Said Steven Schrank, special agent of HSI Georgia. The official added that no accusations against the detained have been formulated.

During the action, masked and armed agents interrupted the activity of the workers, ordered them to align and blocked the works at the battery factory. Video clips distributed on social networks show the extent of the operation. On -site ICE, Homeland Security, FBI, DEA, ATF and Georgia State Police intervened.

We send a clear and unequivocal message: those who operate the workforce, undermine our economy and violate federal laws will be held accountable“, The Department for Internal Security said, according to CNN.

Hyundai reacted in a statement: “Hyundai cooperates with US authorities and undertakes to respect all the regulations in the matter of work and immigration“Said the spokesman Michael Stewart.

A strategic investment for Georgia

The Hyundai Metaplant plant was intensely promoted by the Republican governor Brian Kemp, who described it as a state growth engine. In 2022, the company signed an agreement with the federal authorities to build the first unity dedicated exclusively to the production of vehicles and electric batteries in the US, with the promise of creating 8,500 jobs.

CNN has asked the office of the governor Kemp a comment about the federal operation, but for now it has not responded.

Similar raids in New York and

The same day, ICE agents detained dozens of workers in New York. The data subjects worked on a family business that produces nutritional sticks.

The action was harshly criticized by the democratic governor Kathy Hoch.

The raids in Georgia and New York come against the background of intensifying the anti-immigration policies promoted by the Trump administration, given that Chicago takes into account the National Guard, at the request of the White House.
