The year of Donald Trump's second term in the White House and his authoritarian style had the greatest impact in international politics, where diplomatic mechanisms were replaced by “the changing mood of an egocentric person,” wrote the Spanish daily “El Pais” in an editorial comment on Sunday.

According to the newspaper, Trump's second term opened “the path to autocracy that had previously been closed thanks to a strong system of institutional balance mechanisms.”

“The speed at which Trump's rule destroyed this system was beyond even the most pessimistic forecasts,” wrote “El Pais,” emphasizing that politics had been replaced by the “whims” of the tenant of the White House.

As the daily noted, the US president and his team use social networking sites to “introduce arbitrary tariffs that rock the global economy, mobilize the military to suppress imaginary security crises, attempt to silence critical media (…), blackmail universities, and hunt down and deport immigrants“.

Perhaps in no field has this authoritarian style had as much influence as in the international arena. Diplomatic mechanisms have been replaced by the changing mood of an egocentric person who uses the global influence of the United States for his own benefits, said the Spanish newspaper.

In this way, Trump, among others, overnight, he withdrew the US participation in the World Health Organization (WHO), demanded that European NATO countries spend 5 percent. GDP on defense and threatened Ukraine and Russia, “forgetting who is the victim and who is the aggressor.”

“Internationally, the general attitude towards the New Yorker's transactional approach of imposing the law on the strongest is one of disunity and resignation,” the daily wrote.

“The sight of the eastern part of the White House being demolished to create a giant ballroom for Trump's greater glory is a symbol of our times,” the newspaper concluded.

In the US presidential election that took place on November 5, 2024, Trump won against the Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris. Initially, the Republican's rival was President Joe Biden, who, however, withdrew from the race. (PAP)
