Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Wednesday that he will not sign any guarantee for the financing of Ukraine's military expenses in 2026-2027, and also promised that Slovakia will not participate “not even with a single cent” in these financings, Slovak TASR agency writes, quoted by Agerpres.
After a meeting of the Slovak government held in the town of Visnove in the Zilina region, Fico announced that he wanted to initiate a parliamentary debate on the subject.
In addition, the head of the Slovak government said that he is not surprised by the information about the reduction of American troops in Europe and that he does not feel threatened.
“For me, it's confirmation that US President Donald Trump is rational. He's right to a certain extent,” Fico said, adding that the White House leader is being pragmatic.
Robert Fico pointed out that Slovakia has a common defense cooperation program within the European Union, which shows the need for more efficiency in spending defense resources.
The Romanian Minister of Defense, Ionuț Moșteanu, stated on Wednesday, in a press conference, that the reduction of American troops in NATO's eastern flank could also affect Slovakia.
“It is important to emphasize that we are not talking about a withdrawal of American forces, but about stopping the rotation of a brigade that had elements in several NATO states – and in Bulgaria, and in Romania, in Slovakia, in Hungary. Approximately 1,000 American soldiers will still remain in Romania, contributing to the deterrence of any threats, representing a guarantee of the US commitment to regional security. The strategic capabilities here in Romania remain unchanged”, said Ionuț Moșteanu.
“The Russians will insist that the strategic partnership is not working, that will be the narrative,” warns a former Army intelligence officer after the announcement of the partial withdrawal of American troops
