Edi Iordănescu Pays Tribute to Vlad Chiricheș Following Retirement

Vlad Chiricheș, 36, known for his recent stint at FCSB, has decided to retire from professional football. The former Romanian national team defender shared his announcement during the GSP podcast “2 la 1,” prompting a heartfelt message from Edward Iordănescu, the former head coach of Romania.
Iordănescu expressed his appreciation through GSP.RO, reflecting on their collaboration during significant phases of their careers at FCSB and the national team.
He praised not only Chiricheș’s athletic abilities but also his character and professionalism. “I had the honor and privilege of knowing Vlad Chiricheș well, both as a person and as an athlete, and to work alongside him during two pivotal periods in our careers: at Steaua as an assistant coach and with the national team as head coach,” Iordănescu stated.
“A Leader by Attitude, Not Just by Captain’s Armband”
The former coach emphasized that Chiricheș’s value extended beyond his performance on the pitch, highlighting his exemplary professional conduct and balanced personality.
“Beyond his undeniable football qualities and the impressive career he built at the highest level, I discovered a person of great character, a consummate professional, discreet, balanced, and deeply dedicated to football,” Iordănescu added.
He also acknowledged the sacrifice and responsibility Chiricheș demonstrated throughout his career, viewing him as a leader recognized not only for his captaincy but for his behavior and commitment.
“Vlad was an example of seriousness, sacrifice, and responsibility, a player who always put the team ahead of himself. A leader by attitude, not just by the captain’s armband,” the former head coach affirmed.
“He Still Has Much to Offer Football”
Iordănescu addressed the implications of Chiricheș’s retirement on Romanian football, asserting that the former international’s experience and example would remain significant for young players.
“Romanian football loses a player of great value but gains a reference point for future generations. I thank him for all he contributed to the national team, for his trust, respect, and the moments we shared together,” the former coach stated.
“I wish him great success in this new chapter of his life. I am confident he still has a lot to offer football,” Iordănescu concluded.
