Guardiola’s Prospects with England National Team Dim Amid Manchester City Scandal

Pep Guardiola’s aspirations to lead the England national football team are in jeopardy due to the financial scandal surrounding Manchester City. According to journalist Guillem Balagué, who authored a biography of the Spanish coach, the controversy has significantly altered the likelihood of Guardiola’s appointment.

In an interview, Balagué revealed that Guardiola was once close to taking the helm of England in 2024. However, he ultimately chose to extend his contract with Manchester City, prompting the Football Association to turn its attention towards Thomas Tuchel.

Guardiola Kept FA Waiting

Balagué noted, “For two months, Pep Guardiola kept the FA waiting to decide whether he wanted to be the England manager. In the end, he remained at Manchester City and extended his contract, at which point the FA shifted its focus to Tuchel. In my opinion, Guardiola would have been the ideal candidate after Tuchel.”

He further asserted that the English FA might hesitate to appoint a figure that divides public opinion, while Guardiola himself may be reluctant to take the position due to the controversies surrounding his legacy in football.

The reactions to this situation follow an independent commission’s ruling that found Manchester City guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial regulations between 2009 and 2018.

While there is no evidence that Guardiola was aware of the alleged violations, he has consistently defended the club and its management, stating, “I want every Manchester City supporter in the world to know that I am here – more dedicated than ever. I have been and will always be with my club, the management, the players, the staff, and the fans. We will get through this together,” the legendary coach shared on social media.

Manchester City has denied any wrongdoing and is contesting the decision.
