A study by British researchers shows that the most likely to develop skin cancer vary between men and women, The Guardian reports.

The study, conducted by Cancer Research UK (Cruk), shows that 4 out of 10 melanomas are discovered on the trunk, including on the back, chest and stomach, the equivalent of 3,700 cases per year.

More than one third – 35% – from melanomas in women are located on the lower limbs, from the hips to the feet, and represent 3,200 cases each year.

The study also concluded that 87% of the melanoma cases in the UK are caused by over -exposure to UV radiation.

Researchers believe that variations are due to behavioral differences, men being more likely to stand in the sun without a shirt, while women can wear shorts or skirts as the weather warms up.

“If you notice something different on the skin, such as a new mole, a mole that has changed its size, shape or color or any skin that seems out of the ordinary-do not ignore it, talk to your family doctor,” said Cruk's executive director Michelle Mitchell.
