A Ukrainian man suspected of attacking a monastery in Poland has been ordered to remain in hospital detention due to his health condition. He is currently receiving care in a medical facility.
Psychoanalysts have diagnosed him with symptoms of a mental illness, specifically acute polymorphic psychotic disorder. His current mental state prevents him from participating in court proceedings, including interrogations.
According to information provided by the prosecution, the suspect is experiencing severe psychomotor agitation, and his thought processes are disorganized, rendering logical communication impossible. It was clarified that the expert’s findings pertain to Igor M.’s current mental state and not his condition at the time of the attack.
Context
- The attack occurred on the morning of September 24 at a Benedictine monastery in Jarosław, Poland, approximately 35 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. One priest was killed, while another remains in critical condition in the hospital. In total, five individuals were affected: three priests, a man, and a woman.
- Reports indicated that 31-year-old Igor M., the suspect, allegedly slashed himself with a knife following the police’s arrival. After receiving medical attention, he was transferred to a psychiatric ward and is currently held in isolation under police guard.
