Woman in Kharkiv Develops Rare Botulism After Cosmetic Injections

Symptoms appeared two days after the procedure

A woman from Kharkiv began experiencing symptoms of a rare form of botulism just two days after undergoing cosmetic injections. She reported feeling general weakness and intense thirst shortly after the procedure. Approximately a week later, she faced difficulties with speech and swallowing.

Upon seeking medical assistance, she was admitted to the Regional Clinical Hospital. Following a diagnosis, the patient was transferred to the Regional Clinical Center for Infectious and Socially Significant Diseases, where she received botulinum antitoxin.

The medical center highlighted that botulinum toxin is commonly used in cosmetic procedures to correct wrinkles and in medical settings to treat certain neurological conditions, muscle spasms, and excessive sweating. However, improper administration, excessive dosages, or the use of substandard products can lead to the risk of toxin spreading within the body.

Healthcare professionals caution that symptoms may not manifest immediately after the procedure and can take several days to appear. Dangerous signs include double vision or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, changes in voice, noticeable muscle weakness, and breathing difficulties.
