Attack on Tanker Carrying Russian Oil in the Black Sea

Attack on tanker carrying Russian oil reported by Bloomberg

A Suezmax tanker, capable of transporting approximately 1 million barrels of oil, was attacked in the Black Sea on Sunday near a terminal. According to sources, the vessel was loaded with oil of Russian origin.

The ship’s operator confirmed that no crew members were harmed and there was no oil spill resulting from the incident.

This attack marks the first targeting of a vessel entering the terminal in almost three weeks. Reports note that while the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) primarily exports Kazakh oil, the attacked tanker was specifically loaded with Russian oil.

On July 22, Bloomberg reported that Kazakhstan had to temporarily halt oil transportation to the main export terminal at CPC near Novorossiysk due to a series of attacks on tankers in the Black Sea. Shipping companies had refused to send vessels to the area due to the threat of further strikes, and if the halt continued, Kazakhstan would need to reduce its oil production.

Less than a week later, Kazakhstan announced the resumption of supplies.
