Lavrov and Rubio “matched their watches”. The Russian MFA announces what the two discussed on the phone

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, had a telephone conversation with his American counterpart, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on Tuesday, during which they discussed the international situation and the state of Russian-American relations, according to a note published by the Russian Foreign Ministry, reports EFE and Agerpres agencies.
“Foreign ministers 'adjusted their watches' on the current international situation and Russian-American relations,” the statement released by Russian diplomacy reads.
Lavrov and Rubio also discussed the timing of future bilateral contacts, and “the conversation was constructive and professional”, the Russian MFA also states.
The two ministers have held several talks over the past two years, most recently in October 2025, when they were supposed to address preparations for a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Hungary, following a first such summit held last August in Alaska.
But the Budapest summit did not materialize, after Trump abandoned this initiative, amid the lack of progress in the negotiated settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
