Chelsea’s Misstep During England’s World Cup Exit Against Argentina

Chelsea Football Club sparked outrage during the 2026 World Cup semi-final, where England was defeated 2-1 by Argentina. The incident occurred when the club shared a celebratory photo of their Argentinian player, Enzo Fernandez, on their official Instagram account shortly after the match ended.

Fernandez’s goal in the 85th minute had equalized the match for Argentina, prompting criticism from English fans who saw the post as insensitive. The club quickly deleted the image, but not before it had spread across social media, with many fans expressing disappointment in Chelsea, labeling it a “shameful act” amidst England’s dramatic loss.

England initially took the lead with a goal from Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute but soon lost momentum. Despite defensive adjustments made by coach Thomas Tuchel in the second half, Argentina leveled the score through Fernandez’s remarkable long-range effort. The winning goal came late in stoppage time when Lionel Messi assisted Lautaro Martinez, sealing Argentina’s place in the final.

Argentina will face Spain in the championship match on Sunday, July 19, at 22:00. Enzo Fernandez’s goal marked his second of the tournament, following a decisive goal in the round of 16 against Egypt, which ended 3-2.

Signed from Benfica in January 2023 for €121 million, Fernandez had a standout season in London, recording 15 goals and 7 assists across all competitions. His performances have attracted interest from Real Madrid, but Chelsea remains unwilling to sell him for less than the fee they paid three years ago.
