Kremlin Responds to Trump’s Comments on Potential Ukraine No-Fly Zone

Dmitry Peskov comments on Trump’s no-fly zone statement

Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Kremlin, remarked that Donald Trump’s suggestion regarding a possible no-fly zone over Ukraine is a new idea that requires careful consideration. This statement marks the first time such a topic has been discussed publicly.

Peskov emphasized, “Previously, no one had discussed the issue of closing the sky over Ukraine. In any case, it would imply that NATO forces would operate on Ukrainian territory, which contradicts the goals of Russia’s so-called ‘special military operation’ (the term used in Russia to describe the war against Ukraine). This needs to be understood. Of course, it still needs to be deliberated further,” he stated.

Furthermore, Peskov noted that Russia must reflect on the extent to which this matter has been explored and the parties involved in that discussion.

He also highlighted what he perceives as ambiguity in the U.S. position, pointing to the continued supply of arms to Kyiv while simultaneously attempting to facilitate a peace process.

Context

  • On July 8, during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump announced significant improvements in relations with Zelensky and discussed granting Ukraine licenses for the production of interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense systems. He further indicated that the U.S. could enforce a no-fly zone over Ukraine in the event of renewed Russian aggression following a potential peace agreement. Additionally, he mentioned the desire of the United States to procure Ukrainian drones.
  • Serhiy Kyslytsia, the First Deputy Head of the President’s Office, described the meeting between Zelensky and Trump as one of the best, if not the best, meetings.
  • The Financial Times, citing sources, reported a significant shift in the U.S. President’s stance in favor of Kyiv. One of the sources indicated that Trump clearly expressed intentions to strengthen support for Ukraine to help it achieve a breakthrough on the battlefield, noting that he tends to favor winners.
