Chef of the Norilsk restaurant “Polar Star” Alexander Skibin won the regional stage of the professional skills competition “Best in Profession”. Now he will represent the Krasnoyarsk region at the federal stage, which will take place in August in the Vologda region and will unite chefs from all over the country.
The All-Russian competition “Best in Profession” is part of the national project “Personnel”. Chefs from the Krasnoyarsk Territory are taking part in it for the first time. The competition of professionals took place on June 10 at the Krasnoyarsk College of Hospitality and Service Industry. As Sergei Selyunin, deputy head of the labor and employment agency of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, said, the main goal of the event is to popularize blue-collar professions and attract personnel.
“The “Best in Profession” competition in the Krasnoyarsk Territory covers various professions and areas: from industry to gastronomy. When organizing the chef competition, we sought to show that this profession is multifaceted. This is both haute cuisine and our everyday life. Therefore, on one platform we have brought together participants representing the restaurant business and chefs who work in the education system, healthcare, feed our children, and hospital patients,” noted Sergei Selyunin.
Regardless of the professional experience and place of work of the participants, each person’s skills were assessed according to strictly verified criteria. The jury assessed both theoretical knowledge in the field of cooking technology, occupational health and safety, and practical skills. Over the course of three hours, the contestants prepared a cold fish appetizer, a hot meat dish, and dessert.
As a result, the highest amount of points and first place was won by Alexander Skibin, a representative of Norilsknickelservice LLC and the chef of the Polar Star restaurant. Alexander has been in the profession for 14 years, and has gone through all levels, from assistant cook to chef. Four years ago he moved to Norilsk, where he is now developing his signature northern cuisine. By applying for the “Best in Profession” competition, Alexander Skibin wanted not only to test his own strength, but also to show that the Arctic can also be famous for its gastronomic culture.

“Krasnoyarsk is considered the gastronomic capital of Russia, and this is actually true. Every time I come here, I say that the best restaurants, the most talented chefs are in Krasnoyarsk. But Norilsk has also grown a lot in this sense in recent years. The gastronomy of the northern city includes, among other things, the Polar Star restaurant, which has undergone rebranding and now operates in an updated format, offering guests northern cuisine with a signature accent. And I am sure that the development of culinary art in the Arctic is a step towards making our region an even more special point on the gastronomic map of the country,” said the chef.
It should be noted that Norilsk Nickel is involved in the creation of new infrastructure, including the renovation of the Polar Star restaurant. The company strives to draw attention to Norilsk, show the city from a new side and break stereotypes about the “harsh” north.
The Labor and Employment Agency noted that Alina Ringler from the Krasnoyarsk College of Hospitality and Service Industry took second place in the competition. Vitaly Kosov from LLC TS “Commander”. The winners will be awarded on June 26 in Krasnoyarsk at the All-Russian Employment Fair “Russian Work. Time of opportunity.”
