The inhabitants of Albania are protesting against the investment. Trump's son-in-law is behind it


Participants in Monday's demonstration marched through the center of the capital, shouting “New Albania”, “Join us”, “Albania for Albanians” and “Death to traitors”. Flamingos are a symbol of protest in Albania

The dispute concerns the plan to build hotels on… the uninhabited island of Sazan, as well as on the protected Vjosa-Narta coast. These are wetlands located in the southern commune of Zvernec, which they are a habitat for flamingos, seals and sea turtles. These pink birds have become the hallmark of the opposition movement, which has been going on for over a week now.

Demonstrators take to the streets inflatable bird figurines and banners with the slogan “Flamingo Revolution”. The ecological dimension of the protests is linked to accusations of the lack of transparency of government decisions regarding protected areas.

Edi Rama defends Kushner's investment

In an interview with Reuters, published on Monday, the Prime Minister assured that the ruling team will not give in to street pressure and will implement the project. — It will be a beautiful project, we will implement it and we will be proud that we can contribute to the development of Europe, said Rama.

— This is a big dream, and big dreams have always been controversial, added the head of government. Referring to ecological reservations, he admitted that the assessment of the investment's impact on the environment is yet to be completed and will be prepared simultaneously with construction works.

Resort on Sazan Island and investor status

Kushner presented the idea of ​​​​creating an exclusive resort in 2024, and at the beginning of this year he went to the Albanian region with his wife Ivanka Trump. An investment company linked to the American president's son-in-law obtained funds from the Albanian authorities unique investor status.

In a comment published on Sunday by Politico, the European Commission pointed out that the investment may distance Albania from EU standards in the area of ​​environmental protection.
