A strong earthquake occurred off Cuba, which was also felt in Florida

A strong earthquake struck off the west coast of Cuba on Monday. It was felt “all over the west of the country”, including in the capital Havana, but did not cause significant damage or casualties, the authorities informed, according to AFP.

The earthquake reached a magnitude of 6.1 and occurred approximately 100 kilometers from the western tip of the island, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

“No material damage or victims have been reported so far,” the Cuban authorities indicated, stating that the earthquake was felt throughout the western region of the country, with particular intensity in the provinces of Pinar del Rio and Havana.

AFP correspondents in the Cuban capital reported that the seismic movements, which lasted at least 20 seconds, forced residents out of buildings and into the streets.

According to AFP journalists, the earthquake was also felt as far as Florida, in the southeast of the United States.
