The widow of former French President Jacques Chirac, 93-year-old Bernadette Chirac, died on the evening of June 5. Her daughter Claude Chirac announced the death of the former first lady of the United States in a commentary to the French agency AFP.
She noted that her mother died surrounded by her family.
French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to Bernadette Chirac by dedicating a post to her on social media.
“It was with great sadness that my wife and I learned of the death of Bernadette Chirac. She left her mark on our history along with President Jacques Chirac. Bernadette Chirac changed so many lives with her prudence and perseverance. A great woman with a kind heart has passed away. The country shares the grief of her family, her loved ones and all those who valued her,” he said.
Jacques and Bernadette Chirac were married for over 60 years. She gained particular popularity at the head of the “Yellow Coins” (Pièces Jaunes) campaign in support of hospitalized children.
