“I am not optimistic about peaceful settlement in Ukraine in the near future,” said the UN Secretary General.
According to Gaterrish, it is necessary to immediate ceasefire, but led to a decision on the basis of the UN Charter, international law and resolutions of the General Assembly.
However, as the UN Secretary General noted, the positions of the Russian Federation and Ukraine are too different.
Russia, as Gaterrish pointed out, “decisively resists” the idea of a ceasefire and insists on the need for a global agreement, which is “extremely difficult to achieve.”
“Therefore, I'm afraid we can witness the continuation of this war, at least for some more time, while violence is now especially dramatic, because it has a huge impact on the civilian population, which is absolutely sad,” the UN Secretary General emphasized.
Gutherrish added that he has no optimism on this issue in the short term.
“I believe that Ukraine has a legitimate interest in maintaining its territorial integrity. And it is obvious that Russia is determined to do what will mean the occupation of a significant part of Ukraine,” the UN Secretary General summed up.
Context
Gutherrish stated that the ceasefire in Ukraine should lead to a fair world. “And a fair world in Ukraine is a world that respects the UN Charter, international law and resolutions of the Security Council, including the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” he said.
At the end of August, the UN Secretary General said that the attacks of the Russian Federation on civilians and civil infrastructure of Ukraine violate international humanitarian law, are unacceptable and should be immediately terminated.
